James Spencer
With more than 20 years of counseling experience, I have worked in both correctional settings and the community. Early in my career, I served in a prison-based therapeutic community. Later, I expanded my work to provide counseling services in private practice.
Over the years, I have helped individuals from many different backgrounds. I provide one-on-one counseling, lead group sessions, and teach structured educational classes. Through this work, I guide clients toward responsibility, growth, and lasting lifestyle change.
In addition, I retired as a Lieutenant from the Missouri Department of Corrections. In that role, I handled crisis intervention and de-escalated high-conflict situations. As a result, I developed strong skills in managing intense emotions and helping people regain control during difficult moments.
Today, I bring that same steady presence into every counseling session.
Professional Credentials
I hold the following certifications:
- Certified Reciprocal Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRADC)
- Qualified Substance Abuse Professional (Q SAP)
- Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJP)
- Batterer Intervention Professional (BIP)
- Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor (CCGC)
- SATOP Qualified Professional (SQP)
These credentials reflect years of training, supervision, and hands-on experience. More importantly, they support my commitment to ethical care and professional excellence.
My Approach
First, I believe real change begins with honesty. Next, it grows through accountability. Finally, it becomes lasting through consistent action.
Because of my background in both corrections and counseling, I understand structure and compassion. I hold clients accountable. At the same time, I offer respect and support. This balanced approach helps people feel both challenged and encouraged.
Above all, I focus on practical growth. Each session aims to help clients build tools they can use in daily life. Step by step, those tools lead to stronger choices and healthier relationships.
About Me
I have been married to my wife, Laura, for more than 50 years. Together, we have three children and nine grandchildren. Family is central to my life, and it shapes the way I value commitment and integrity.
In our free time, my wife and I enjoy “destinations unknown.” We like to explore new places without rigid plans. One of our favorite trips took us to see the historic lighthouses of Maine. The rugged coastline and steady beams of light left a lasting impression on us.
A Quote That Guides Me
“You are not discouraged
Unless the situation you face
Seems bigger than the GOD you serve.
HOW BIG IS YOUR GOD?”
— P.L. Liddell
This quote reminds me to keep challenges in perspective. It also shapes how I approach both life and counseling.
Life Goal
My life goal is simple. I strive to put God first. I aim to be an honorable husband, father, grandfather, and man. Most of all, I want to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
If you are looking for experienced, steady, and accountable guidance, I would be honored to walk alongside you.
